This verse has borne, and continues to bear, a special significance for Crystal and I throughout the course of our relationship. It has been our intention from the very beginning to place Christ first in all aspects of our relationship with each other. This has meant seeking to please the Lord before seeking to please each other and at times denying each other in order to not causing the Lord any displeasure.

This has by no means been, nor is, a simple endeavor as it is contrary to our egocentric and self-pleasing human nature. It is often discouraging to know that we have failed and disappointed our Lord. Throughout the course of our relationship, in the times of trial, disappointment, and discouragement this verse has always helped to encourage us and refresh within us a proper perspective. Unless we seek the Lord’s goodness in every aspect of our relationship we will not find the ultimate peace or joy which we earnestly desire.

Our relationship is so much more than just the sum of our emotions and actions toward each other; it is much greater than just the two of us. The entirety of our relationship, with both its inevitable highs and lows, is a testimony of the grace of God at work in our lives. It is a tremendous comfort to know that the Lord is at work in the land of the living. It is He and not we ourselves who is the strength and center of our relationship.

We have seen the goodness of the Lord in our lives and we have not lost heart because our hearts belong to Him.
